Thematic focus

MIF focuses on Film, Video & Television or media and the arts. MIF began working on public interest media in 2008 and runs the Journalism Funders Network.

Membership in this network is open to all philanthropic organizations that fund journalism projects. We offer a free and accessible platform for those engaged in the field to share news, information and activities; to consider and propose solutions to systemic challenges within journalism; and to spark collaborations and develop relationships to strengthen the field at large.

Main activities

MIF's work is focused on philanthropic interventions in North America and internationally.

"We provide valuable information about the state of media-related funding, impact metrics and policy. We highlight substantive projects that demonstrate the power of media in the public interest, and how funders are using storytelling to advance their missions."

The work of MIF's Journalism Funders Network is organised into three main categories:

  1. Organizing convenings and events

  2. Researching journalism funding trends

  3. Field-building

Regular convenings with our journalism funders network have helped funders develop closer relationships within areas of shared funding and facilitated a growing sense of cohesion across funding areas to more effectively face the challenges to the journalism landscape. The convenings offer deeper insights into the current trends and future directions of journalism funding, which we incorporate into our research and field-building work.
